The Fender Precision Bass, known as "P-bass" for short, is the first model of the electric bass designed by Clarence Leonidas Fender and brought to market in 1951. Although the Fender Precision Bass was first presented some 15 years after the original solid body, fretted, guitar-style electric bass produced by the Audiovox Manufacturing Company in Seattle, Washington, the Fender Precision Bass was the first mass-produced and commercially successful electric bass. In its stock configuration, it is a solid body instrument equipped with one split-coil electric pickup. The Fender Precision Bass is probably the best selling electric bass of all time and is still being manufactured today. In 1957, the body design was changed from one similar to the Fender Telecaster to more resemble that of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, with the edges contoured for comfort.

The Fender Jazz Bass (or J-Bass) was the second model of electric bass guitar created by Leo Fender. The Fender Jazz Bass is a solid body bass guitar typically with two pickups, four strings, an adjustable bridge tailpiece, maple neck (usually with a rosewood fingerboad), alder (sometimes ash) body built with a 34 inch scale length. The Fender Jazz Bass has a bright funky sound, with more high end than the Precision Bass. This makes the Fender Jazz Bass ideal for slap playing as well as finger-style players (bassists who pluck the strings with their fingers rather than using a pick or a thumb). The sound of the fretless Fender Jazz Bass became a classic of jazz fusion music thanks to famous bassist Jaco Pastorius. It also became a classic in the hands of bassists such as solo bassist and session musician Marcus Miller, Herbie Flowers, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Nikola Sarcevik of Millencolin, Verdine White of Earth, Wind, & Fire, Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone and Graham Central Station, Noel Redding, John Entwistle of the Who (in the 1960s), Geddy Lee of Rush, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Les Claypool of Primus, Matt Freeman of Rancid, Chi Cheng of Deftones, Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys, Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and +44, Vicho Vox of Tinto Vox, and Adam Watson of Retravox to name but a few. Bassist Berry Oakley of The Allman Brothers Band used a Fender Jazz Bass for the infamous bass line of the song Whipping Post. Bert Ruiter, bassist for Focus used a Fender Jazz Bass throughout his tenure in the band. Nikolai Fraiture, bassist for The Strokes has been seen using the same Fender jazz bass his grandfather bought him when he was 19.

In 2005, Fender introduced the Fender Jaguar Bass. This is more or less a variation on the traditional Fender jazz bass design - the difference being that it has additional switches to turn the jazz pickups on and off and it has a switch to turn it from an active to a passive bass. The Fender Jaguar bass retains the slim Fender Jazz neck, bi-pole pickups, Jazzmaster/Jaguar body design and the trademark Fender Jazz growl.

The Fender Mustang Bass is an electric bass guitar model produced by Fender. Two variants, the Fender Musicmaster Bass and the Fender Bronco Bass, have also been produced from time to time using the Mustang Bass body and neck.

The original Fender Mustang Bass was introduced in 1964, at around the same time as the Fender Mustang guitar, and was similarly intended as a student-level model. The Fender Mustang bass has been reissued several times over the years by Fender and is currently still in production as of 2007, with the Bronco Bass and Musicmaster Bass also being offered but under the Squier brand name. Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones used Fender Mustang basses in the late-1960s and early-1970s. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea learned how to play bass on a Fender Mustang. Dee Dee Ramone played many shows with a Fender Mustang bass.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass is an electric bass guitar created by Fender and introduced in late 2005.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass is generally seen as a combination of a Fender Jazz Bass and a Fender Precision Bass. It features a split single-coil pickup from a Fender Precision Bass at the mid position and a single-coil pickup from a Fender Jazz Bass at the bridge position. This combination of pickups allows the Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass to have the low end sound of a Fender Precision Bass, and the brighter, higher notes of the Fender Jazz Bass. It can even do both simultaneously. The bass is fitted with one volume knob per pickup, and also an overall tone knob. The body itself is shaped like the Fender Jazz Bass, though substantially lighter (the Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass weighs about 7 pounds, compared to the 10 pounds of the Fender Jazz Bass). It's also understandably thinner than the Fender Jazz Bass body. The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass also has the standard "C" shaped neck and 20 medium jumbo frets.

The Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass has various cosmetic features that differ greatly from similar basses. It's only available in black, with matching black headstock. It has smoked chrome hardware, and no pick guard. This makes the bass notoriously vulnerable to fingerprints. The neck features dot inlays, but only on the side; the fretboard is just black. There is a cream inlay that goes around the perimeter of the body, and the bass has a Fender Stratocaster output jack
