Harry James Potter (born 31 July, 1980) is a fictional character and the main protagonist in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novel and film series.

The Harry Potter stories concern events at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where Harry Potter 's best friends are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry Potter 's most intriguing physical characteristic is his lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, which Harry Potter gained when the Dark Wizard Lord Voldemort attempted to murder baby Harry Potter with the killing curse, Avada Kedavra. Voldemort also killed Harry Potter 's parents and destroyed their home on 31 October, 1981. Harry Potter is famous throughout the wizarding world for being the only known person to have survived Avada Kedavra and in doing so Harry Potter caused Lord Voldemort's downfall.

In the novels, Harry Potter , the only child of James and Lily Potter, is often told that he resembles his father, with similar perpetually untidy jet-black hair. Harry Potter later discovers, however, that he is mostly like his mother in personality and character. Harry Potter has also inherited his mother's green eyes. Harry Potter is described as being small and skinny for his age in the first few novels, but by the fifth Harry Potter is described as tall. Harry Potter also has a thin face, a very fair delicate complexion and a rather soft, quiet voice, except when he's angry. Harry Potter 's appearance is often characterised by his round spectacles.

Harry Potter 's story opens with the unrestrained celebration of a normally-secretive wizarding world which for many years had been terrorised by Lord Voldemort. The previous night, Voldemort had discovered the refuge of the hidden Potter family, and killed Lily and James Potter. However, when he attempted to kill Harry Potter , the Avada Kedavra killing curse rebounded upon him, and Voldemort was destroyed, becoming nothing more than a spirit: neither dead nor alive. Harry Potter , meanwhile, was left with a distinctive lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, the only physical sign of Voldemort's curse. Harry Potter 's mysterious defeat of Voldemort results in him being dubbed "The Boy Who Lived" by the wizarding community.

The following night, a wizard (Hagrid) delivers Harry Potter to what will be his residence for many years afterward. The orphaned Harry Potter is subsequently raised by his cruel, non-magical relatives, the Dursleys who, in attempt to rid Harry Potter of his magical powers, hide Harry Potter 's magical heritage and give Harry Potter severe punishments after several strange occurrences.

However, as Harry Potter 's eleventh birthday approaches, Harry Potter has his first contact with the magical world when Harry Potter receives letters from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which are taken from him by his Aunt and Uncle before Harry Potter has a chance to read them. On Harry Potter 's eleventh birthday he is informed by Hagrid, the gamekeeper of Hogwarts, that Harry Potter is in fact a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts. Each book chronicles one year in Harry Potter 's life, which is mostly spent at Hogwarts, where Harry Potter learns to use magic and brew potions. Harry Potter also learns to overcome many magical, social, and emotional obstacles as Harry Potter struggles through his adolescence, Voldemort's rise to power and the Ministry of Magic's consistent denials of Voldemort's threat for a whole year.

In 2002 Harry Potter was voted No. 85 among the 100 Best fictional characters by Book magazine and also voted the 35th worst Briton in Channel 4's "100 Worst Britons We love to Hate" program.
